A recent abandonment, the old St. Matthew Baptist Church sanctuary on Huger Street in downtown Charleston has certainly seen better days. Vacant since the congregation moved to North Charleston in 2004, this building once served as a headquarters for the Civil Rights movement in Charleston throughout the late 1950′s and 1960′s. Martin Luther King, Jr organized several marches at St. Matthews and performed dozens of baptisms here in his final years.
